Why Spirit Doesn’t Care if You’re Vegan: The Myth of Purity in Spirituality
There’s a pressure in modern spirituality—a coded message that if you’re not plant-based, alkaline, raw, fasting and green juicing your way through life, you’re somehow… less evolved. That your connection to Spirit is fogged. That you’re still “unclean.”
But let me say this clearly:
Spirit does not care if you’re vegan.
What Spirit does care about is your alignment. Your intention. Your truth. Your devotion… and sometimes, your truth requires that you drop the shame-wrapped belief that you must suffer or restrict in order to be “pure enough” to access the divine.
My Story: Four Years of Veganism That Almost Broke Me
I was vegan for four years. Not the on-and-off kind. I was deeply committed. I believed it made me lighter, clearer, more connected. And yes—at first, it did. I felt good. Spiritually “clean.” Energetically vibrant.
But then my body started to betray me, o r rather, it started screaming for help—and I didn’t want to listen.
At the time, I was working as a full-time teacher, constantly travelling across the country, staying in accommodations I barely had time to breathe in. I was exhausted. My sleep was poor. I barely ate because I was always moving. Still, I clung to the idea that this lifestyle made me “better.”
Better than who? I’m not sure. But that’s what the spiritual algorithm preaches, right?
Eventually, my body forced the truth on me. I started having severe health issues.
Blood tests didn’t lie—despite the “health” I thought I was cultivating, my iron was dangerously low, my hormones were misfiring and I was deteriorating rapidly. Medical professionals advised me to stop. To reintroduce animal protein. To rest. To stop moralizing food and start listening to my body.
And that’s what I did. But I’ll be honest—I felt guilty. Like I was betraying Spirit.
Until I remembered:
Spirit never asked me to restrict. It was the algorithm (and dermatologists) that did.
The Spirituality of Food: More Than Morality
The purity myth is an old one—repackaged in every religion, every movement, every ideology.
But food is not just fuel—it’s culture, survival, ancestry, instinct.
Some of us descend from fishermen, shepherds and farmers. Our lineage knew the sacredness of life and death. They thanked the animal. They fasted with the moon. They didn’t obsess over macros—they listened to the Earth.
Spirituality is not about perfection, but rather about presence. If you feel alive and nourished on a vegan path—beautiful! But if your body is shutting down while you cling to an identity rooted in being “pure”—that’s not spiritual. That’s martyrdom.
And Spirit never asked you to martyr yourself.
Not for food. Not for optics. Not for the ‘likes.’
What Real Alignment Looks Like
True alignment is listening to your body even when the community might judge you.
It’s eating what your ancestors would’ve blessed. It’s honouring your body temple—even when that means roasting a chicken. What Spirit wants is your honesty. Your willingness to do the hard thing. To let go of performative purity and return to intuitive nourishment.
You’re Not Impure. You’re Evolving.
I still carry compassion for that version of me who thought her diet determined her divinity.
But now, I live softer… and in that softness, Spirit meets me in ways I never imagined.
Let this be your reminder:
Spirit isn’t monitoring your plate. Spirit is witnessing your soul.
