Not Every Intuition Is Divine: The Danger of Mistaking Anxiety for Downloads
Let’s cut through the fog… Not every flutter in your chest is intuition. Not every chill down your spine is a divine warning, and not every voice in your head is your higher self whispering secrets from the ethers.
Sometimes? It’s anxiety in a velvet robe pretending to be prophecy.
The Spiritual Gaslighting We Do to Ourselves
We live in a spiritual age that glorifies the “download.” Everything’s a sign. Every coincidence is a message. Every silence must mean betrayal… and we wonder why our nervous systems are shot.
But the uncomfortable truth is this:
If your body is constantly in survival mode, your intuition might be malfunctioning.
An overactive nervous system doesn’t receive divine messages—it distorts them.
The Difference Between Intuition and Fear
Let’s be honest. Sometimes we don’t know if we’re being warned… or just triggered.
Intuition is neutral. It’s direct. It’s quiet but grounded.
Fear is frantic. It spirals. It clings. It demands immediate action or panics when none is taken.
Intuition says, “Take a breath, feel into it.” Anxiety screams, “They’re gonna leave, you better run!” or “This will go wrong, sabotage it now!”
And the worst part? In the moment, they feel the same.
My Story: When “Intuition” Was Actually Trauma in Costume
There was a period of my life where I swore I was receiving divine guidance. I’d get a pit in my stomach when I was about to see someone. I’d hear thoughts that felt foreign and urgent. I’d have dreams I interpreted as warnings. But you know what I was actually experiencing?
PTSD flashbacks, heightened cortisol and abandonment trauma dressed up as downloads. I thought I was “spiritually gifted” for sensing betrayal before it happened.
Truth was—I was projecting past wounds into the present and calling it foresight.
It wasn’t intuition. It was a deeply intelligent defence mechanism my body created to protect me—until it started sabotaging the very connections I craved.
Spirituality Is Not a Replacement for Emotional Regulation
You cannot meditate your way out of unresolved trauma. You cannot journal over your nervous system dysregulation. You cannot moon-bathe away attachment wounds. These tools are powerful after the inner work is done—but when used prematurely, they can reinforce false beliefs: That love isn’t safe. That peace means danger is near. That hypervigilance is spiritual awareness.
How to Recalibrate Your Inner Compass
Before trusting every hunch as divine truth, ask yourself:
Is this feeling coming from my body or my trauma? Does this message feel grounded or urgent and frantic? Am I reacting from memory or responding to what’s actually in front of me? Have I sat with this long enough for my nervous system to settle?
Spiritual maturity isn’t about always being “right.” It’s about knowing when your lens is clouded and choosing to pause instead of predict.
You’re Not Broken—You’re Learning to Discern
Having anxiety doesn’t make you spiritually broken. It makes you human… and intuition is a muscle—not a magic trick.
You train it not just by listening, but by healing. By letting your body know it’s safe again. By separating the signal from the static. By forgiving yourself for the times you got it wrong. You’re allowed to evolve past your survival self. You’re allowed to feel safe without assuming danger is around the corner… and you’re allowed to trust again—yourself most of all.
