Ego’s Final Trick: Pretending It’s No Longer There

One of the most convincing things the ego can ever say is this: “I don’t have an ego anymore.”

That sentence doesn’t sound defensive. It sounds enlightened. Calm. Resolved. It often arrives wrapped in spiritual language, self-awareness and good intentions… and that’s precisely why it works.

The Ego Doesn’t Die — It Gets Smarter

There’s a widespread belief that the spiritual path is about dissolving the ego entirely. Killing it. Transcending it. Leaving it behind like an outdated operating system.

That belief is… convenient. I say this because it allows the ego to evolve into something far more subtle: the ego that believes it’s gone.

Early ego is loud. Reactive. Desperate to be seen. Late-stage ego is quiet. Polished. Certain. Often convinced it’s neutral, objective, or divinely guided. I’ve seen this not just in others — but in myself. There was a point where I genuinely believed I had “done the work.” I was self-aware, emotionally literate, spiritually disciplined. I didn’t react the way I used to. I didn’t chase validation the same way. I could observe my thoughts… and yet — beneath that calm — there was a new identity forming:

The one who sees clearly, who isn’t triggered and the one who has transcended. That was the ego…just wearing better clothes.

How the Ego Hides in Spiritual Maturity

The most dangerous ego isn’t arrogant — it’s untouchable.

It shows up as:

  • “I don’t judge — I just see things as they are.”

  • “That doesn’t trigger me; I’ve healed that.”

  • “I’m past needing validation.”

Sometimes those statements are true but sometimes they’re defences disguised as wisdom. I say this because the ego doesn’t only want superiority — it wants immunity. Immunity from challenge, feedback, discomfort and ultimatelyfrom being wrong. When ego hides here, it becomes very hard to detect, especially if you’re articulate, intuitive, or spiritually inclined.

Why This Phase Is So Easy to Miss

Ego feels safest when it aligns itself with values you genuinely care about; truth, healing, integrity, growth so - when it speaks, it doesn’t sound like insecurity but rather like principle. This is why some of the most self-aware people struggle the most with blind spots. Not because they lack insight — but because insight has become part of their identity. The moment “being aware” becomes who you are, awareness stops being flexible. It hardens.

A Subtle Tell Most People Ignore

Here’s one of the clearest signs ego is active — even in advanced stages: The inability to stay curious when challenged.

Not reactive anger, not defensiveness, just a little shutdown. An internal verdict that says, “They don’t see what I see.” That verdict may be accurate — but the lack of curiosity is the clue. Real humility doesn’t require self-erasure. It requires openness and ego closes openness the moment it believes the work is finished.

The Purpose of Ego (That No One Talks About)

Here’s the part that often gets skipped: Ego isn’t the villain, it’s the structure that allows you to function as a self. Without ego, there’s no boundary. No agency, no grounded action in the world. The goal isn’t eradication — it’s relationship.

A healthy ego can say:

  • “This is my perspective, not absolute truth.”

  • “I may be missing something.”

  • “I can be grounded and still uncertain.”

That’s not weakness… That is integration.

What Actually Signals Growth

Growth isn’t the absence of ego. It’s noticing it without panic.

It’s being able to say:

  • “Something in me wants to be right.”

  • “Something in me wants to be above this.”

  • “Something in me doesn’t want to feel exposed.”

And staying present anyway. In my own work — especially in 1‑to‑1 sessions — this is often where the real shift happens. Not when someone realises they have wounds… but when they realise the identity of being healed has become another shield. That moment is tender. Humbling. Liberating.

A Question Worth Sitting With

Ask yourself this — gently, honestly: Where might I be mistaking certainty for clarity? Not to shame yourself or to unravel everything. Just to remain available to truth.. because the ego’s final trick isn’t domination. It’s convincing you there’s nothing left to see.

Moment of Reflection

If this train of thought of mine stirred something — especially if you recognise patterns of certainty, spiritual identity, or subtle defensiveness — you don’t have to untangle it alone. You’re welcome to book a 1‑to‑1 session with me here to explore these layers in a grounded, non‑judgemental space.

Sometimes what we call “ego” is simply a part of us asking to be seen honestly.
